The middle of the night has always whispered its eerie song to me, as if those reckless enough to meet it head-on deserve to be told some of its secrets. It’s only fair. I’m not sure I have all the answers as to why the night calls to weary souls such as mine, but its eyes are surely watching with judgment as the five rebels and I creep on silent feet through the property grounds and up to the mansion of a high Terran official.

The acreage of the grounds is expansive, most of it surrounded by the luscious pine and fir trees that are prevalent within the mountains surrounding Zarmenia. Hopefully, we’ll get in, make a strong point real quick, then get out. I can’t get caught tonight. The consequences would be too dire and the blowback too vast to even consider. They have not apprised me of the details on our way here. Geonni, Trinity, dumb and dumber—Dimitri and Connar—picked me up a few miles from Jance’s house.

We sneak up along the poolside on foot while avoiding the armed guards posted all over the property. The main house sits large and long across from the pool, which is wrapped up for the winter. It’s shocking that the people that are supposed to be leading the Terrans are living with such creature comforts while most of the population is struggling to eat and survive. It really makes me sick.

“Are we still planning on sneaking inside the back door?” I whisper, looking over at Geonni for answers.

Nodding but saying nothing, Geonni pulls out a black circular device that’s about half an inch thick and concave in the center. Several lights are embedded around it, and he wiggles it for emphasis. That must be the new antilock device that I’ve been hearing about for ages. He must’ve finally figured out the prototype, his endless tinkering paying off.

One by one, we each duck around wrapped pool furniture, statues, and bushes as we tiptoe along the pool area and up to the porch. An attached cabana with its own kitchen and dining area gives us more cover in the dark night, the moonlight casting a friendly shadow as it deepens the darkness around us. The back entryway to the main house sits before us as we all squat down, hiding within the shadows cast by the lantern lights nailed to the house walls.

Geonni places his antilock device alongside the electronic keypad, and it attaches itself there so he doesn’t have to hold it. My anxiety intensifies as I peek behind my shoulder and see a guard lurking several yards behind the pool house. We cannot get caught. I’m tense as I elbow Trinity and point my head towards the unassuming house guard. They aren’t SSPARROWs, but they’re certainly armed. Looking out into the dark, she squints but sees what I see. She comes in close to her dad’s ear and cups her hands around her mouth as she delivers the message of haste.

With Geonni’s Dezlar screen on its lowest light setting, he taps on it.
